Default Attach button to elastic band?

Sorry if this has been posted before, I tried several searches and couldn't find an answer.

I found a beautiful button I want to attach to an elastic band. My daughter is 4 months and doesn't have much hair, I'm worried about the shank poking her head. How would you attach the button to the elastic? If I need to remove the shank, how do I do it?

If you need help picturing what I'm trying to do, here is an example from another post:

Thanks in advance.

I would cut the shank off, and file it down to where it's gone or even with the back. Then I would glue a piece of felt to the back where it used to be and either glue that to the headband or sew the felt on first and then glue the button onto the felt.

HTH.
