I hate fray check because of discoloration and it's not long lasting. And I am scared of the woodburning tool (and don't want to invest either). I have been using a lighter. I seal all ends before. And for v-cuts, I fold the ribbon in half (but without the sides of the v touching) and seal both sides of the v at the same time. Perfect shape everytime. Goodluck! HTH

I found a great woodburner that came with extra tips at WM for about $10. So for me, it wasn't the "investment" that kept me away or any thing. I am so glad I did. I do use a lighter if we are in the car on trips though.

I use a wood burning tool, I love it. It took me awhile and a few burns to get used to it. I would be lost without it, especially when making the ribbon sculptures.

I've never tried the lighter and the fray check was worthless for me, just made a discolored mess.

That's exactly what I was going to say :-)

I use my woodburner for cutting ribbon and sealing my ends. I do not waste any ribbon. I used to be afraid of it but after practice I will never use fray check, which btw is only a temporary seal, or a lighter again. I could not master the lighter because it would always seal unevenly for me.

I use a woodburning tool on light colored fabrics. I just couldn't get the white ribbon to heat seal with a lighter without leaving a slight brown burn underneath the ribbon. Sooo, if it's already on and I'm hard at work, I use a WB tool. If I'm just working on a sample or a single bow and it's dark fabric, I'd just as easily turn to a lighter--no wait time, then.

I voted as lighter, but I use a woodburner too. I use the lighter when I am in a hurry and don't feel like dragging out the woodburner to just cut and seal a few ribbons.

I started with lighter, then got woodburning tool. I use that most of thi time now - lighter for just needing one or two ribbons quick. I'll usually sit and cut a bunch of ribbon one night - especially when doing pony streamers, then line clips, or sew streamers the next day. With ribbon over 7/8" wide the lighter wouldn't be straight seal for me.

I've used all three...but I also use a candle when I'm doing certain things so this way I don't have to keep relighting...and I've used a BBQ lighter with the long stem also, my hubby found these cigar lighers that work really well too
