Frankly, it's easier without the maker. The maker is a pain to use. Just clever marketing - another product you didn't know you couldn't live without!

I bought the Flower Yoyo Maker and I hate it. The flowers only turn out like 1 inch or something....for all that work. Hate it Hate it Hate it....

Don't know about the original though...

Can't you make it w/o folding down the 1/4 inch? as long as you are careful about how you gather, and if you are applying a center?

I like the yo-yo template for the regular circles. The flower one does suck so don't buy it. You can make them with out.

Well i guess i did a fair job without the template. The person that asked me for te headband went crazy for it, totally loved it. Since it was my first one and i totally failed on the gathering part LOL, i sold it for $7.00. So not bad at all

Folding a hem keeps the stitches from pulling out of the fabric when you gather the circle. This is true for all woven fabrics. Although... I've never tried using knit fabric, or Polarfleece, or non-woven fabric (like felt)... Maybe you wouldn't need that 1/4" hem for fabric that doesn't fray?
