Default Wood burning help!

Ok, so my hubby bought me a wood burner, that is a 5 in 1, so I guess it is also a solder iron too.

I tried it out right away, so super excited...but I can't keep the line straight!

Any tricks to keeping a straight line or just plain tricks? Do you mark with something the 4.5" for the clippies?

I would so appreciate the help if any of your wood burning gals have ideas for me!

Thank you!
Wendy

It's just practice. Once you see how quickly you can move over the ribbon, you'll get the straight line. You could use a metal ruler too if you need to.
Try using it on some scrap ribbon to get the hang of it.

I just use a metal ruler. I'm not coordinated enough to free hand it :-)

I was using the little blade attachment but it never seemed to get hot enough to cut quickly. I changed to the one that looks similar but is more blunt not quite a blade and it cuts so easy.... If you have a small wood board to lay the ribbon on like a cutting board, maybe just a small one it works great.

I was thinking about a metal ruler too! I don't want my dd to say, ok mom, lay off of cutting the ribbon! She didn't like my glueing onto the clips, until I got the double sticky tape, now she lets me! lol

Thanks gals for helping! Now I need a bigger piece of glass, so my metal ruler fits on it!

Anymore ideas, I would love to hear about measuring. I thought about putting a piece of paper underneath the glass with 4.5" market all the way across it, but would love to hear how others are doing it!

TIA

I tried a blade like that too, but it didn't work. I changed to the one that looks like a screw driver head. Works great, but I am squirrly with the tool!

My neighbor made me a "guide" so to speak for mine. Used a scrap piece of aluminum from one of his projects and grinded a line down the middle of it and that is what I use as my guide to burn the ribbon.

I can free hand straight cuts but I like to use a metal ruler for angles. I have a very large glass cutting board that I bought years ago. The top surface is "bumpy" but the underside is smooth glass plus its tempered. So I flipped it over and moved the padded feet. Works great and it's huge. I can keep the burner on it also.
