Default Tutus-what am I doing wrong?

I want mine to look like this-
http://ny-image0.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.89756352.jpg

but mine look like this-
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php...ng_id=34593001

I mean people like them but its like the tulle I am using is too soft, KWIM?
I get mine at Joanns, should I be using a heavier tulle so it stands out more?

Are you using bolt tulle? How wide are you cutting your strips?
I personally love that crumpled style. It looks very shabby-chic, almost like ruffles.
But to get the other look you probably do need a bit stiffer tulle. And probably at least six inches wide. You could also try placing them somewhere steamy to try and de-wrinkle the tulle.

Some of mine does that too. I think it might be to soft so when you pull it to tie the knot it strecthes too much and looks like that. I switched to the rolls instead of bolts and it seems to be way better now. Also maybe your cutting the strips to thin? I've gotten some of my tulle from Joann's and it didn't do it to me whe I cut it in at lest 6 in strips. Hope this helps. Btw I do like your tutus the way your doing them now. They look fun and fluffy.

I think you're doing the same thing I was - using too thin of strips. I couldn't figure out why mine were like that either, 'til I tried using 6" strips. And voila - a beautiful tutu appears! I was always using tulle from the bolt, and the first tut I'd seen on tutus said to use 3" strips. But since trying the 6" tulle rolls, I'll never go back to anything smaller than 6" strips.

Too funny. I think we were all typing pretty much the same response at the same time, lol. Great minds think alike, right ladies.

the one you want looks like they use 6" strips. and the other one looks like 2" strips. It also helps if you cut the strips shorter.

ex: Infant 12" for 6" in length
Toddler 16" strips for 8" tutu

Of course thats not factoring the elastic 1/2" for infant and 3/4 for toddlers NO ROLL

It's all in the wrist you don't have to pull the tulle so tight you stretch it but you form the little loop around the elastic and work so it gets really tight. the tighter and closer the knots the fuller the tutu. HTH

Yes use the rolls, and I use 2 pieces of tulle for each strip I tie. Make sure the bottom is even and then when finished I spray the tutu with starch. HTH!!

I have started using a crochet hook to pull the tulle and find that I get a "cleaner" looking knot and no stretching. It also seems to go faster too.

okay I will start using the rolls and bigger strips. I do like my tutus, I just want to have two different styles. Some people prefer the stiffer ones.
Thanks ladies
