Default Lets talk spikes

For those of you who do the twisted boutique, to you stitch & crease your spikes? I just got a woodburner & have seen how some people will just use the woodburner to melt the middle together to fuse the spikes. Trust me, it is on my to-do list this weekend.

I would love to hear any tricks or things that you've learned by trial and error. I love doing these bows but spikes just take forever. Oh, and don't get me started on the dovetails. I so wish I could use the woodburner and make it look good. I just can't get it to look as good as it does with the lighter. Even when I tried to use the barrel.

I have done it both ways and to be honest I like them both. It is just a preference thing. You would have to try it and see which you like better.

It took me awhile to get used to mine. I was scared of it at first but after a few burns I got used to it and now cannot do bows without it.

Well, I haven't tried the woodburner, just sew them separately, but now I have a new project. I don't do many stacked. Now not to sound like a complete idiot but what are "dovetails"?

I just do not know where to begin at with it. I have used it to fuse my ribbon together while making a bow, but never sealed anything with it as far as ends.

Dovetails are the "v" cuts at the end of your ribbon.

I know. I need to get good at doing dove tails. I just got mine in the mail this week & got out the bucket of scrap ribbon. I can't get the angles right!! I wonder if one of those 90 degree metal rulers would be helpful?

I think I remember seeing somebody use the woodburner to notch the very center to fuse, then do little slits at the top & bottom of the spikes layer, that way cinching doesn't occur.... Does that make sense? That way when you wrap the center around the stacked bow, it doesn't pull the spikes all wonky (no creasing with this method)
