It's not nearly as cheap and you can't get whatever color you want, but I have seen presmocked material at Walmart, Joanns and Hobby Lobby. It looks just like a dress on the spindle- it usually comes in hawaiian print or bright colors. I am sure you could buy that and either make the dress out of it very easily or cut the top part off and use it for the smocking. I think at Walmart it was $7 a yard and that was 50% off.

I have seen this, my mom actually got some last year after season for like $2 a yard, I didn't realize what it was but the print looks like something that should be on patio furniture....although I would never tell mom that...

Hi I don't really post here much but I thought I would jump in because I do know a little bit about smocking. Smocking and shirring are very different. Smocking is done by hand, the smocking machine is called a pleater and all it does is pleat the fabric so it can be smocked by hand. Smocking does not have the elasticity as shirring does. I will try to attach a picture of my daughters in their smocked dresses I made for Christmas. The smocked portion as no elasticity at all and is purely for decoration.

PS, Tonya your dresses are very pretty!

Wendy,

I live in southern california and believe me it was very hard to find smocking classes but I did. I had an excellent teacher. You can contact your local SAGA chapter (smocking arts guild of america) to see if there is anyone local that teaches classes. I also recommend the book A to Z of smocking by Country Bumpkin. It really isn't that hard but is time consuming.

Thanks!

I love smocking - I just can't do it, lol! I have a friend who has a pleater and does beautiful work, but when I tried it was all uneven and HORRIBLE looking! Haven't tried since. Shirring though? It was easy-peasy after I figured out all the little things you have to do to make it work right.
