I don't buy the tulle on the rolls but when i make a tutu i only buy 6 yards of tulle, and it is really poofy i'm confused because i see a lot of ppl say they use 50+ yards of tulle on their tutus

I think a lot of girls use the 6" spools and use double layer strips. So you will tie two strips on the elastic at the same time. I've never done it that way, but that's something I've seen on this site and will try it next time I make a tutu. I think it makes the tutu extra fluffy and full. Plus that's how they do the different color underneath.

I am a little confused here too.. So far on my tutus I have done 1 to 1 and 1/2 of the rolls and just added 2 yards of another color from the bolt. I know that if I am doing a tutu with just the rolls, I need about 2 rolls per tutu, varies a little depending on size and length. So yes, about 50 yards.

If I were just going to use the bolts I have no idea how much it would take...

I ran out of 6" black once and all I could find was the bolt. I bought 6 yards... brought it to work... Folded it up lenthwise then cut it in about 6" strips using the papercutter her in my office. I was doing orange and black and I probably used about half of the 6 yards (the other half was orange 6")... I bet that does measure out to about 50 yards roughly.

Yep the 50 yards is 50 yards of the 6" rolls of tulle. If you use bolt tulle it's about 6-7 yards give or take and depending on size too.

I actually did the math and broke it down...i think the width of my strips were 5 inches instead of six, and this was for a tutu with a 24" waist. But you get the idea. We were buying 40yd bolts online because it is soo much cheaper; kind of a pain to cut but with the $ saved.
Double layer=72 pieces =approx 5 yds (7 tutus per 40yd bolt )
Triple layer=103 pieces =7yds (5.4 tutus per 40yd bolt )
Quad layer=144 pieces =10 yds (3.8 tutus per 40yd bolt )
