Default help heat sealing ribbons

O.k. will show my newbieness here but I want to make some things and I know that I should or must seal the ends of my ribbon after I cut it and I'm sure it is listed here somewhere but when I searched it was just overwhelming, some people are talking about using lighters, woodburning tools, fray check etc. etc. without going into hock for alot of different items what would be the best process for me to seal the ends of my grosgrain ribbon after cutting. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Janis

I use a lighter as much as possible. If it burns (which means it is not polyester, could be nylon or acetate?) then I use fray check. Pretty inexpensive & available at most craft stores in the sewing section.

Just swipe your lighter quickly along the end of your ribbon.

If you're just starting out & want to try a few, and have a lighter I'd go that way at least for now. I really like using the wood burner now that I've gotten the hang of it, because it saves a step. With the lighter, you want to carefully & quickly run the lighter back & forth along the edge of the ribbon until it is smooth. Be careful, and practice on some scrap ribbon before you try to do it on a piece you can't part with. I caught a few on fire, and severely warped the shape of the cut on a few others before I got better at it. Good luck, and enjoy making bows!

I have the cheap Wal-Mart woodburner less than $10 and works great. I tried a lighter but the Woodburner is easier. I use a piece of glass from a dollar store picture frame. Put the ribbon on the glass then just run the woodburner along the edge of the ribbon. Take a scrap piece of ribbon and try it a couple of times to get how fast to swipe the woodburner across. It just takes a swipe. The glass is better than a cookie sheet, which I use to use.

woodburning all the way

At the beginning I used lighters BUT that quickly ran out or I would get burned PLUS hubby hated when I kept stealing them every weekend when we had friends over, lol!

The woodburning is so economical and it looks cleaner to me

I bought a woodburner too for under $10 and really like using it. I'm a klutz and could only imagine the damage I'd do to myself with a lighter!!!

Crafts it should be with the woodmaking stuff (i.e. bird house kits, etc)

You could also use a coupon at joann's or Michael's to get the woodburner at 40%-50% off. I use a woodburner too--I think it's a LOT easier than lighter. You cut your ribbon, and touch the barrel-- (not the tip) flat across the end of the ribbon. I can post a pic if you need JLMK. Good luck!!
