You can make small knots without stretching the elastic out. I make sure that I'm tying my tulle in the same direction each time. So if I do left side over right and pull, I do that all the way around, then go back and do the same thing in between each piece

Yeah, you only pull the first knot as tight as the elastic, so it's snug, but not rolling it. Then the second knot, you pull tight if you want it small. And, I agree, do the knots the same way every time - left over right, right over left

This is what I do too. Haven't had a problem with elastic breaking or anything like that.
