Thanks so much guys!! I guess I should not give up and I'll get the hang of it. THe one I got is called the creative woodburner by walnut hollow.... it says it should heat to 950F..... it also came with 3 tips..... do you think it should be ok? or should I look for one that gets even hotter?

I love this forum.... Its so nice to ask questions/bounce ideas off of others with the same interested.....

I have a cheap one from wally world and LOVE IT. I lightly touch my ribbon to it and I haven't had any gunk really. The only time that I do is if I have been using it all day like non-stop. I just clean it off and continue my bow making. I sometimes use my gas stove burners. LOL! If I am in a hurry to make something.

Good Luck!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your glass idea!!!!!! WOOT!!!

It may gunk up a bit after awhil, but I just use fine grain sandpaper (similar to the nail file idea) to clean it. And yes, use the angled tip for cutting straight lines...works good for cutting your v's on spikes too! And for sealing ends I do the same thing...use the hot shaft to lightly touch the ends of the ribbon.

One other fun thing I figured out was to swich to the rounded tip to make antennas for ribbon sculptures. Just lightly touch your ribbon edge and it will curl around the rounded bit.

For a cutting surface I do something different though. I got a piece of glass at Home Depot (I think it's 10x13). It came with a cardboard "frame" around it for packing and safety but most of the glass is visible. I just slid a piece of 1/4" size graph paper between the cardboard and the glass to use as a measuring tool. Then I marked on the edge of the glass with permanent marker 1" increments so I wouldn't have to count squares. This works AWESOME because I don't have to fuss with a ruler too! And the glass is a perfect cutting surface.

HTH!! And trust me, you are going to LOVE using the woodburner!

Don`t worry mine should be the cheapest of all cause here in my country I couldn`t find a woodburner so my DH told me that was the same thing used for soldering so i bought the cheapest one in the hardware store and I paid like 4$ and it works so go ahead and keep trying

I got mine tonight. I haven't used it yet but can't wait. Anyone have any tips?

I spent way too much money at Hobby Lobby (of course!). I couldn't help it, though. I found a ton of clearanced ribbon.
