I tie mine (pull ends through loop, technicalloy) and use ribbon because the elastic tends to stretch and lose it's elasticity. I also think a pretty bow in the back *makes* the tutu.

ETA it's also more cost effective to use ribbon. I buy my tulle and matching ribbon from UB. I pay something like $.07/yard for the ribbon vs. $.40/yard for elastic

I use elastic... but then I wrap matching ribbon around the knots on top. It makes it look finished and you have a bow on it.

I've been making some with elastic and does anyone else have a problem with the elastic stretching too much? I used a 3/4" no roll elastic and I started with 17" thinking it would fit my 20" daughter. By the time I was done tying the tulle around it I stretched it so now it is too big for my daughter. What am I doing wrong? lol What elastic do you all use and how do you keep it from stretching as you tie the tulle on?

I can't vote because I have done both. I have done an elastic with ribbon on the ends to tie, plain elastic, and plain ribbon. I love all three.

i used to prefer ribbon. the only thing is that you have to have an exact measurement for it to fit correctly. although it does make a beautiful bow in the back [or front depending on where you tie it] and the knots don't come undone cause you can do it as tight as possible. until i discovered the square knot! there's other posts about it also. if you use a square knot on elastic it won't stretch out at all and you can still make it pretty tight. i still wrap satin ribbon around the waist for a finished look, but the elastic still allows the tutu to grow with your daughter for awhile. i'm loving elastic lately! i vote elastic!

I used ribbon for the first one i made but quickly switched to elastic. It was harder to put on my daughter and when you have a squirmy toddler you have to be able to move fast LOL

I use elastic and offer the option of wrapping the waistband with satin ribbon. The satin ribbon looks nicest when you use a wider elastic, IMO. It's also more comfortable against the skin so I always use it on my tutu dresses cuz it's not as itchy under the arms. But if I don't use the satin wrap, I still finish most of my tutus with a sewn-on bow.
I've never tried to use ribbon only because it doesn't seem like it would grow w/ the kid.
