Chalkboard mat - how to attach chalk?

My chalk mats are all made for DD's 1st bday but I decided last minute to add a holder of some sorts for a piece of chalk (or 2).

I want the chalk attached to the side or chalk-side of the mat, has anyone done this? Any ideas how?

I can't seem to picture what to do to hold the chalk tightly enough so it actually stays. Hope this makes sense

I have made about 50 of these and what I do is take a piece of black 1/4" elastic and sew it on the lower corner. I use a piece about an inch long and sort of stretch it enough so that two pieces of chalk fit under the elastic.

what is your secret for perfectly sewn bias binding? I round my corners, but it never looks quite right......

Well I have been sewing for over 50 years so that might have something to do with it! LOL
It just takes practice. I use the wide double fold bias tape and go really slow around the corners.

That is very cute this is the first time i see one of those.
Now i am going to have to make some for my kids since they really enjoy coloring specially when we are on the go. Thanks for the idea.
