Unhappy Need help on korkers

Just started out making my own korkers. Read all the instructions posted here and gave it a shot but guess what, of the four dowels two of it melted. Can anyone tell me what went wrong. I read someone says the cheaper the ribbons the crunchy it gets but i'm not using any of those though.

yuck! melted!

I guess, first be sure your oven is set about 250

second, I use the middle rack

third, make sure the dowels don't flip up and touch the heating element...had that happen once!

fourth - how long did you leave them in? I started out, quite tediously, with 18 minutes and then worked up to 24...that is what works in my oven

I don't wet the dowel or the ribbon either, everything goes in dry

Hope that helps...anyone else have any idea what may have happenned?

Did the ones that melted have dots on them? They will melt if left in too long, or are to close to the heat. Be sure not to have your oven temp to high. I put it on 275 and bake for 25 min. take them out let them cool, spary with stiffen stuff let that dry and then take them off the dowel.

I use 250 and actually time for 25 minutes but the 20th minute it melted. Maybe the temperature is too hot or i left it in there for too long. I use grossgrain without dots ribbon. I'll try again for the same temperature and make sure it doesn't touches the pan. Will update when i try it again, Thank you ladies for the help.

I'll try with that and i sure agree with you that everyone's oven is different after what happen to my korkers. LOL. Thank you.

I have used my little left over korker ends to make centers..

I use maybe ten korkers that are three curls (or loops), these are korkers done on smaller dowels, too, like 1/4 inch

then I sew them, like you said, one at a time like stringing popcorn, until I get a look I like...

I hope that helps. We really like korkers!
