Smile Problem with heat sealing

Hi
I'm new to hair bow making, but have read a fair bit about it online. I'm using a tea light to heat seal the ends of my ribbon, but am finding the ribbon blackens/burns even though I'm moving it through as fast as possible. It's worse on light coloured ribbons.
I've given up trying to heat seal the ends of ribbon that I've cut a V out of as it discolours too much.
Any tips?

Thanks

By tea light are you meaning a candle? I use a "clicker" style lighter with the super long handle and usually don't have any problems. Candles would produce smoke which causes blackening. You might also try a wood burning tool. They are about $14 at Joanns or Hobby Lobby and you can use a coupon to get them even cheaper.

I too use a wood burning tool and it is fantastic! Use it on a glass cutting mat with a steel ruler and you will get brilliant results

Yes, candles/tea lights produce soot. I just use a Scripto View from Walmart or a woodburner, depending on what I'm sealing. I've tried the Bics and also got soot from that, but it's really rare with the Scripto. I don't know if they have different formulas of fuel or it's something else, but it's just something I've noticed over the years. And if you wear one of those rubber thumb protectors, it saves wear and tear when you flick the lighters.

I have that problem with candles too sometimes. I use a zippo lighter- I was going through disposable lighters like water!

I use a zippo lighter and it works great for me and my friend using a wood burning tool and she swears by that! But candles have never worked for either of us because of the smoke.

The cheapest and best option out there is a woodburner......

Wood burning tool is the best option. I got a ceramic tile from the hardware store and my woodburning tool and just cut my ribbon with the woodburning tool on the tile. It cuts down a lot of time and saves all the fraying edges

I just use a Bic. No issues with that.

I am also very new to bow making and am using a lighter and haven't had any problems with it blackening. Had a couple of try's sealing the 'V' cut pieces and slightly mis-shapens them, but maybe I'm holding it there too long?
