Default How to singe WHITE flowers without getting black on them

Help! I'm using a polyester/taffeta type fabric. Is it too thick? Do I need something thinner that doesn't have to melt as much? I can't do it without getting black marks on the edges. Not cool! Suggestions?

I'm assuming the blackness you're getting is soot from the smoke. Someone once mentioned using a heat gun/tool to make singed flowers. I think she mentioned that it could be found in the embossing section of the craft store.

You need to make sure you don't get to close to the flame, just close enough to melt the fabric.
It also helps if you use twissers to hold the fabric.

I have heard of some gals trimming the burnt/black edges off. That would leave a UN-singed spot though, BUT you could then try to re-singe that spot?

OM GOSH, what a GREAT idea! My hubby has a heat gun, that he bought from harbor freight, CHEAP! I need to try this and see if it works!

I'm curious to hear how the heat gun works.

I don't get burnt marks as long as I don't use a candle. If I do get a black mark when I'm done I will snip that piece off and lightly sing it again. My problem is that I go through lighters fast when I make singed flowers.

A little tip I recently discovered...I buy my lighters at the dollar store. I get the big ones used for fireplaces and bbqs. I can't believe they are only a dollar each! I used to get them at my supermarket and they are upwards of $5.00 each! I buy like 20 at a time.

The trick is to go very slowly and let the heat do the work. Its tempting to want to go faster and to hold the fabric too close to the flame. You need to stay back aways and just let it happen.

Thanks! Yes, I think a lighter and not going too quickly will be the best for me. I'm literally doing this for ONE order. I'm not going to continue to make them so I don't want to invest in any tools I don't have to!

i read somewhere here that if you get the scripto clear vu lighters - those work better than the bic lighters . . . haven't tried it but thought i'd pass it along.

i think? they said walmart has them.
