Default wonder under

You can get stuff called wonder under, it is just iron on interfacing, and then you could just hand stich across the top and bottom for added support so it stays on. I have seen them done with glitter glue to stay on also.

I make initial shirts with ribbon on them. I do the initial applique and then i do the ribbon. I iron on heat n bond to the ribbon, place the ribbon on the shirt, rip out the side seams of the shirt, sew the ribbon onto the shirt, then sew the sides of the shirt back on. I've made quite a few of these and they haven't come apart using this method.

I like all of it except for ripping out the seams and sewing it back. I am too lazy to do that . I think I will just buy the ones Gymoree sell.

Do you do anything to shrink your ribbon before you attach it to the shirt? You know... so that when it's washed the shirt doesn't pucker?

Thanks ~ MK

This is exactly the way I do it also.

I also rip out the side seam when I make ribbon shirts. I only open it up as much as I need so it's not bad. You can get something called Wonder Tape at JoAnn's. It's double sided tape that dissolves when washed. It holds the ribbon in place so that the tshirt doesn't stretch as you sew it and is wonderful. I can't make a ribbon shirt without it.

if the ribbon is polyester is shouldn't shrink, atleast I've never had it happen. When I've used trim that I feared would shrink I put it in a sink of hot water and then hang it to dry on my shower curtain rod.

You do have to be careful not to let the tshirt stretch as you sew on the ribbon. As the other posters have advised, wonder under or heat n bond is very helpful. I'm going to look into that disolvable stuff, sounds promising!

The wonder tape is great. So easy to use. You can use it on anything that you are going to wash and it doesn't show at all. I try to buy it when Joann's has a 50% off notions or I have a coupon. I think it's $3 something but it's a pretty good size roll. The tape is very skinny but the roll is a good size. I think it's with the other stuff people mentioned-wonder under, etc, other adhesives.
