I buy the cheap stuff from Dollar General...it seems to have a very fine spray that doesn't oversaturate...also makes it easy to do mulitple coats if you want some parts a bit stiffer than others. I can't compare to the more expensive stuff, since I've never bought it.

I use Stiffen Stuff or reg starch. Spray bake and spray again. If I am in a hurry I blow dry and shape at the same time. I prefer this method because it allows me to mold the shape of my bow. My dd beats the tar out of her bows and they still hold their shape.

There really is no right or wrong way to making them firm and shaped. It is more of a preference thing.
