Default Ruffling Help

What's the secret to getting really ruffly singed flowers like these? They look like regular circles, but have that beautiful ruffliness that reminds me of petals.

Yeah those are gorgeous!!!

Uhm, I don't make flowers...but it looks like the ribbon is loosely cinched on one side, and intermittent tucks were made during assembly as the ribbon was wrapped around.

The secret is to let the heat, not the flame make the organza fabric pucker.

Hold the organza fabric edge about 6-8 inches over the flame (with tweezers to avoid burning your fingers), then slowly lower closer to the flame. You will notice the edge will start to pucker. (Note: if you hold the middle of the organza over the flame, the whole circle will pucker).

Tips:
- Singe your edges first. Makes it easier later on.
- Lift quickly after you get the right pucker because these can pucker too much very quickly.
- Work one section of the edge at a time instead of trying to do the whole piece in one pass.

Hope that works for you.

I agree with the above post. When I started I used to light them on fire lol. Also cutting a scalloped circle helps and organza ruffles way better than satin IMO. So if you combine the 2 it's a really neat effect.

And try using thinner fabric. I love the satin lining and silk that is 4.99 from Joanne. It singed beautifully.

I've found that organza is the best fabric to use to achieve this really ruffly effect. I cut out my circles, then use my scissors to make "divets" around the edges of the fabric (scalloped edges). As mentioned above, slowly lower the fabric to the candle, but don't let the flame get too close to the fabric, as organza curls and heats up VERY QUICKLY! (learned this the hard way). I also have found that it curls up (ruffles) better for me if I focus singing toward the center of the fabric rather than the very edges. It gives the fabric layer more of a "cupped" appearance.

Good luck!

if you look at this flower of her's . . . you can see the edge better w/out the pattern distracting . . .

http://www.etsy.com/listing/85169573...c-rose-vintage

and i read somewhere it depends on whether you apply the heat from the top or the bottom or sideways as this determines which way it will curl.
