Default Gymboree vs. lead law

Is it possible that Gymboree marked down certain pieces in the Happy Rainbow line because the crystals and embellishments wouldn't pass after Feb 10?

I went to Gymboree this week and the manager was marking down stuff. She pulled tons of things for me that were all $4.99. Naturally, I bought it all but I got to thinking, why are some pieces in the line marked down so much and others full price?

So - I laid out all the clothes and the common thing is that they all have crystals or some other plastic embellishment.

We own a bike shop and were told by a major supplier to mark down many kids items to get rid of them before Feb 10. If this is the case with Gymboree, do I want to keep the clothes? Am I worrying too much?

What do you think???

There's plenty of other rhinestone shirts that aren't marked down. So.... I don't know what the deal is.

I work for another children's clothing retailer and we've been proactive with this new lead law. We have started to comply to the law a couple of months ago. I would think Gymboree would have started to do the same thing knowing the new law will be effective soon

I thought I heard somewhere that Gymboree, and other retail stores knew of the law last year and that they had already been making sure their things would comply.

That said I don't understand why wouldn't you want to keep the clothes???

The manager of the store kind of jokingly said "I wonder what is wrong with this stuff that they marked it down so much." I guess that coupled with the fact that one of our bike vendors told us to mark down stuff to get rid of it, got me thinking.

It is probably fine. It does seem like an unusual mark down though.

So here's my question, Maria, maybe you will know the answer...

As a consumer, how will I know that the shirt/dress/pants I'm buying off the rack are CPSIA compliant? Is there new labeling on clothing we should be looking for? Or do we just assume that it is all good after Feb 10th?

Thanks~Jennifer

Not all stores were proactive I heard Nordstrom pulled hundreds of shoes off the racks. They didn't even try to put them on sale. I asked my sale slady if maybe they sent them to get tested but she had no idea. They also were marking down the items that had swarovski crystals too. I at least know I am going to take advantage of all the sales taking place before Feb 10th!!!

keep the clothes. we know there is nothing wrong with them. and when you daughter out grows them sell them on eaby. you can still do this as long as you are not selling multiples of on item. we can still sell our used childerens clothes. we dont but 4 of the same top in the same size. as long as the clothes are different and multipuls of one item it is leagle.

All great points! I am keeping the clothes and will re-sell them when she outgrows them. I actually bought the matching flip flops today for $4.99! What a great deal!

This law certainy is interesting. It is amazing how some companies have already complied and others don't even seem to know the law is going into effect.

I'm not sure if we are putting labels on our clothing. I'm going to take a look at some of girl's clothing to see. I do know that we require our vendors to fill out a form we've created certifying they did perform all necessary testing. When I was in a meeting one of our managers mentioned something about Old Navy tags having something on them but I can't remember if it was lead related. I was wearing Old Navy that day and checked. I can't believe I can't remember.
