Default Protect yourself in group buy.

If you are new to the forum, I'd like to let you know that it happened before on this forum that the member who hosted the group buy failed to deliver the products.

So the up side of the group buy--you get the cheap stuff.
The downside--there is risk.

There's risk on any online transactions but we can minimize the risk:

1. Get as many info as possible about the group buy.
* Reference of the member who host the group buy.
* The quality of the products you are going to buy.
* Your cost. The cost should be like this: $0.5 per item, $20 S&H from supplier to the host, $25 +10% customs tax duty, USPS priority mail from host to the buyer. Each item is 0.5oz (plus box). It shouldn't be like this: $0.05 per item.

2. Never send personal check or money order. The best way is to use PayPal credit card funding source--do not pay by PayPal balance or eCheck because you cannot get your money back if the recipients close their account. You are protected by credit card company and PayPal plus your credit card # is not exposed. I have no experiences on PayPal charge back procedure but did file dispute several times with my credit card company (Chase). They charged back immediately then did investigation.

3. There's a deadline to file the dispute with the credit card company to charge back. Make sure to check with your credit card company. Assume that you have to file the dispute within 45 days and the group buy takes 50 days. Think twice, three times or more before you participate. Again, Assume that you have to file the dispute within 45 days and the group buy takes 40 days. Be sure to let the host know that if you don't get the items by 44 days, you will file the dispute--you can pay the host later if the package arrives on 45th day.

4. What if the package arrives in time but the quality is so poor that you cannot use it? You can file the dispute (before the deadline) but you have to ship the package back to the host at your own cost (make sure to use delivery confirmation when you ship the package back).

5. Everybody who participated the group buy, please take several minutes to find the original group buy thread and leave your feedback. That's way to say "thank you" to the host and will help other members.

All these are for buyers protecting themselves in a group buy. What about the host? Sorry in the e-commerce world, most of the rules are for protecting buyers. The only way host (seller) to protect themselves is to deliver the high quality products as promised. So you might want to think twice, three times maybe more before hosting a group buy.

Feel free to post more tips. Also, please vote if you think this post will help others. Every time a member votes or replies, this thread will be bumped to the top of the 'New Post' page so more members--newbie or not--will see it.

Thanks.

Michelle

I think It's great that you put this up Michelle. Some people don't realize that they could be taken advantage of in group buys or when they purchase anything from anyone. I personally don't do them unless I really know the person and I have often seen things for sale and thought RUK? Thats double the price!!

Thank you Michelle! My mother was part of a UB buy that the woman took everyones money and didn't even order the ribbon! After the deadline to file with Paypal she confessed and said she would pay everyone back, well my mother still is out over a hundred dollars and no ribbon!

See that's what I mean. It would have been a lot cheaper for her to order herself. You only need a 50 dollar order. That way she'd be paying for the ribbon and shipping both ways (not cheap for that much ribbon) and paypal fees as well as the persons time. Rip off. The person in charge of the group buy should have told her that it would be better for her to order directly from UB.

In some states, taking money that someone gives you to provide a product or service and using that money for your own purposes is considered "theft by conversion". Here are some examples:

Of course it's theft, but lots of times when you don't know the person or the person stays so far away, it's cheaper to just cut your losses and these people know that.

If the state does not consider it theft by conversion...it can also be called "Theft by deception"

Thank you all.

All credit card/PayPal payments are protected. As a buyer, do not hesitate to file the dispute before the deadline. Because the promise is to deliver before the deadline. Plus you can always pay again if you received the package later.

It doesn't matter if it's theft by conversion or Theft by deception. It involves endless hassle so most probably you just give up the $$ you lost in the group buy. But if everybody use PayPal and use charge back, PayPal or credit card company might investigate if the amount is large enough.
