Default website scam question

Hey -
I'll try to keep this short. I started a site through WAHM eshoppe last month. My sister who is a hairdresser also wanted to start a site to advertise her services. She met with a web designer who said that a lot of the places that sell hosting for cheap and web domains are a scam. Not sure if this is true - I'll explain how. I guess you're not buying the domain - and after a year of owning your site and paying 7-15 dollars a month for hosting they raise the price to a super high amount. You can't afford it then they own your site - all your peeps know your site plus you've advertised so you'll continue to get hits but not be running it any more. She bought her domain for 150 so that she owns the domain - she said I'm "renting" my name. I just don't know what to think.... Have any of you owned your site for over a year? Has anyone else heard anything about this??
Thanks,
Danielle

Umm no thats not true at least not with with mine. I think you might be confused. Whamshoppe doesn't own your domain I believe they sign you up with godaddy? somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I pay for wahmshoppes to host my site(thats what they do is host you) but I have my domain with someone else and I pay them yearly for my domain.

I've had my site for 2 years.

I don't use wahmshoppes but if you sign up with a hosting account that gives you a domain free when you host the site for $10-15 a month there, then you do not own your domain. You can purchase a domain name for about $10, or less when go daddy has a sale. There are places to buy your domain, like go daddy and yahoo. I prefer go daddy. You have to renew your website yearly, or else you loose it, but again it only $10 per year.

A domain name is just a domain name. You will not be able to use it unless you purchase hosting from a hosting company. Most hosting is $5-20 per month depending where you go. You will have to point your name servers to your hosting site (they help you) so that others can see your pages.

Or if you do not want to pay for hosting, after you buy your domain you can create an ebay store, etsy store or ecrater store, and then forward your domain to that store. Then you only have to pay your fees to the stores (ecrater is free). Forwarding a domain is say someone types in yourdomain.com it will take them to yourname.etsy.com. Cheap and easy

you are technically renting the domain if you pay year-to-year. you can "buy" it for lifetime if you want. as far as raising the rates, that wouldn't matter b/c you could always transfer it to another host if you wanted to. so you can pay what you want.
i host with GoDaddy and use WAHMShoppes.
