Default Website or Etsy which is more Profitable?

Hi Ladies, I have an etsy shop and have had it for months with only 1 sale so far. My question is do you make more sales through your own website? On etsy there is so much competition with hair bows etc. I was pouncing yesterday and was quite disgusted I saw a shop that opened in late dec and had hundreds of sales with really crappy looking hair clips. You could see lots of dried glue, crooked ribbons, glue stick strings, frayed ribbons . I don't know maybe I am too picky. I have tons of clips that I feel don't make the cut and i just keep them for my baby rather than trying to sell. Any input would be great . thanks

I have had experience with both and I would say that, in my opinion, Etsy is the way to go when you're just starting out. I found that my website was too difficult for me to maintain alone and it was a constant struggle to drive traffic there. I did get sales there, but found that my etsy sales were far greater and when I felt like my website was no longer worth the time I had to put into it I closed it down and now just concentrate on my etsy store.

There is definitely alot of competition on etsy, but I don't think there's any more there than on the internet in general. Hairbows are just a saturated market all the way around I would be happy to offer some feedback on your store if you want to post a link or pm me. I am, by no means an expert, but I might be able to offer something. It can be overwhelming and frustrating, but don't give up! Good luck!

I started out with an Etsy store. Great way to get started in my opinion. I than moved up to a website, and now I wouldn't do it any other way.

I think the main thing is advertising. You have to get your name out there, or it won't matter if your on Etsy, or a Webpage! It has taken me almost a year to get my name out there but now I get orders everyday.

I would stick with Etsy until your getting steady customers, than switch to a website.

But really its all about promotion, and advertising JMO

I did it the other way around. I had my website, and then someone introduced me to etsy.
I get more business thru my website, but it's just as much work as etsy!!

Just been reading this guys... do you think Etsy is the way forward in the UK or just America? I had never even heard of it until I came on here

now i'm a newbie to hairbow making, but have been doing well w/ sewing & quilting--what i found that helped me when i was starting out was starting a blog through blogspot.com --in order to make it so that you're not just writing to yourself and have actual readers, i joined blog groups, participated in swaps and even hosted a giveaway to drive traffic, from there i went on to etsy, placed a thumbnail on my blog to etsy and that is how i got sales. i've had my website for over a year now and have found it to be a great place to also receive orders for those who do not have etsy or ebay accounts, but can pay through paypal, through wordpress and using godaddy.com to host your website you can have your blog & website store in one, but it can get pretty pricey, so i've remained separate for now.
My website is currently being hosted by homestead.com which has some great pre-made website designs from simple to complex which is really easy to navigate in my opinion--the only drawback you can't have someone outside of homestead design your website for you should you want to choose that route, but that's also pretty costly from $500 & up.
Right now i'm paying $4.95/mo for hosting through homestead check out your options, i would start off on etsy and build up some customers, definitely start a blog if you haven't and then when you get to that point, open and start a website and maintain all 3, the only thing that you would really be paying for is your website and any fees you may incur by selling on etsy.
