Default International Shipping

I've had my website up for about 2 weeks and decided to open an Etsy shop about 4-5 days ago... I finally (I'm being dramatic, here- I feel like my shop's been opened foreeever- I still haven't had ANY sales ) had someone contact me about one of my tutus, but she is located in Canada and asked if I could ship to her.

Is anyone familiar with international shipping? What is the best/cheapest route? I didn't really want to mess with international shipping, but this is my first sale, and I think I'm limiting myself a lot by not shipping outside of the U.S.

If anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it!

THANKS

First class shipping is really easy and really cheap for being international. BUT there's no way to track it. You'll have to go to the post office and fill out the little green customs form (not much to it). Because tutus are light, shipping won't be much. You can get a quote there to give her if you want before you bill her.

I'll let you sleep with my husband before I give you my supplier information, so don't ask.

They are actually not green forms anymore. They look like smaller versions of the priority ones, they are white. I take a few home each time I go in because I ship internationally fairly regularly. It saves time to just fill them out at home.

I recently learned that you CAN track them, just not through the usps website. But with that said here is what one of my international orders shows online:

http://trkcnfrm1.smi.usps.com/PTSInt...=LC157078359US

SO I am sort of thinking now that they changed the customs forms you can track, at least to a certain point, online. I have another that shipped before this one and it just shows:

http://trkcnfrm1.smi.usps.com/PTSInt...=LC157077897US

When I ship an item I just save the customs form and receipt and then I put the customs number into paypal tracking info.

Mine are still green! I wonder if my post office just hasn't updated yet? I filled some out two days ago and they were still green, just the little ones, about 3 inches or so.

I input the customs number in paypal too.

Mine got the new ones probably 2-3 months ago (it was just a few weeks before I went on bed rest).

They told me when I took a package in that they would still take the green ones (I already had one filled out) but that some of the PO in the area were making people fill out the new ones.

They are about the same size, they just have multiple pages to them like the priority ones. But they are still easy to fill out, just address, return address, contents, value, sign and date...

We have been learning this process too!! Ugg, its difficult and expensive.

I am certainly glad we live in the US. Priority for 4.95 sounds so much better than some of the international rates. And both USPS and Canada Post have said they have limited tracking abilities.

Depending on the weight that you are trying to ship, we have found that a Flat Rate Envelope can go international for 10.95 and can be Registered for anther 11.50. Also, for the same 11.50, you can register a First Class package (up to 4 pounds). This could also be helpful. I just sent a 2 lb package today for about 10 bucks.
