Default how to digitize images

I really want to start digitizing my own images....I spend alot of money buying other peoles patterns for bottle caps, embroidery patterns and applique patterns.
Where can I learn the ins and outs of ditigizing BEFORE buying a program? I have not taken a computer class in over 20 years, so my skills are not up to date! I want to be confident in what I am doing, and be able to teach my girls about it (the fundimentals!)
thanks!

Anyone?
Do I need to look into a computer class? I'm actually suppose to take college classes next semester for computer and math. However, I am quite impatient ...er..um...ambitious! (I know, I need to take some spelling classes too!)

I have this book http://www.amazon.com/Digitizing-Mad...ing+embroidery and the rest of my learning has been trial and error. I use Embird and have for 7+ years and I am *finally* getting confident in my skills.
