~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My husband and I went to First Trade Days in Canton, TX. If you live in TX, you probably know about this monthly event.
Anyhow
There was a woman there who was selling bows for 1 and 2 bucks each! Her most expensive bows were the double ruffle ribbons ones and those were 3 bucks. I could have died. How can anyone make money doing that? She had bows and bows everywhere (100's, if not 1000's of bows!)
One of the things that bothered me the most is that it creates an unrealistic set of expectations for those who shop for bows. You know? The general public now thinks they SHOULD get bows for that price.
Ugh! It was distressing.
I think you have to look at the quality also! Some of these bows could have been bought in bulk.
I was recently at a huge craft show with ladies who had "tons" of bows. They were terrible! They fell apart when you removed them from the bow cards and they even looked like they had been carted around for many months. Some were even sun faded.
It takes certain people to buy certain bows. Now, if they looked out of this world.....then that's not good!
I didn't look that long. Almost everything was plain, solid grosgrain. Her presentation was simple- just lots and lots of ribbon holders (made of hangers and ribbon), filled with bows. Women were buying the bows like crazy!
I was afraid her bows were made of uber cheap ribbon. I didn't want to go feel it up too much. LOL
She said that this is all she does, she makes bows all month long for this Canton stuff.
Jen- YES! I emailed you.
If she had that many bows and most were simple, solid grosgrain, she is likely ordering her products wholesale. That is what I do (not because I sell that volume but because otherwise shipping is too expensive ). Anyway, a solid, single-layer grosgrain bow on a lined alligator clip costs me 36 cents to make, for just cost of materials - so, if she gets good prices on her materials, even at $1, she's making more than 100% profit.
It sounds as if she was selling her bows at Wholesale prices. That would be frustrating!!
