I did that idea, and I'm letting a boutique that purchased from me use it. I used a Quaker Oats container (the big one) and glued it upside down to a small square piece of cardboard. I then sewed a piece of pink fleece, and covered the entire thing. Since fleece stretches, it covered the ugly cardboard base too.
I wish I had taken a picture of it! Maybe I'll make another one, and post a photo.
I found two to be too tall, the bands are a pain to get off at the taller heigth. It wasn't for plain crocheted headbands, it was for the ones I made with ribbon flowers on them.
For just plain crocheted headbands, I keep them in a basket, jumbled together, and use a clippy to hold a small business card size price on it. I found it attracts attention from the colors being intermixed, and people LOVE to "dig" to find the one they want...

I had that problem too so I just cut into them a bit. If I didn't, they were too long and stretched out the headband. I think I cut about 1/2 inch from each side where the little notch was so that I still kept the sides to hold the headband in place there at the end.

Hey you could probably put the crochet headbands on my display. Check out my pics at Flickr: shemorg's Photostream. It is really nice. You can take the tubes off for transporting.

If you have time you could cut card stock paper to the size of a book mark make a slit in it and put them on that. I have done that for shows then lay them on the table. People don't mind digging too so a basket even would work. Hope that helps.
