Default Newbie with a quick question on stiffening grosgrain ribbon

Hi! So glad I found this site. Between this, youtube and pinterest I feel like I can finally figure this out....but still learning!

Here is my quick question...

I'm making single layer grosgrain cheer bows, but the grosgrain is floppy....how do I get it to stiffen up? I read something about putting them in the oven on low heat for like 10 minutes, but not sure if I should do that before shaping the bow or after?

If I can do them in the oven, I'd rather go that route than spend more money on some other spray or something...unless it's hair spray and I have that at home already LOL

I don't have this problem with my 2 or 3 layer bows due to all the Heat and Bond.

Any help would be appreciated!

the oven won't stiffen them, just help them keep their shape.

Have you tried a fabric stiffener? I use that on my korkers and it works great. I "paint" it on w/ a sponge brush. I don't like to use my oven for non-food items, I'm always afraid things will leach into our food.

What type of fabric stiffener do you all recommend? I used hairspray last night and it worked surprisingly well...my only concern about this is that, since they are cheer bows, the hairspray will wear off as the bows will be used during pretty physical activities and sometimes during wind and light rain.......any experiences with the longer term longevity of hairspray on hair/cheer bows?

Thanks

Newmanclan3, do you use the stiffner full strength. I have the Stiffy and it made the ribbon so stiff you couldn't even bend it. Do you put it on the korkers before you bake them?

I have tried stiffener, oven and hairspray as well.
I had pretty good results with all method but I like hairspray the best.
It's easy, fast and no worries about what would happen to your oven. Sometimes I only have to stiffen one or two bows so it would be a pain to use the oven.

i swear by the hairspray over stiffener.. i just got the liquid one in the laundry isle... its the blue bottle... cant think of the name off the top of my head. hairspray doesnt ware off for me i spray it real good to where its wet and let it dry on its own.

I do use it full strength but I don't bake them, I just let them dry. I never put non-food items in the oven.

I personally don't stiffen my plain grosgrain bows and they stand up just fine. I have in the past seen some with stiffener & after a bit of time it start to almost come up and flake off. I don't know what brand was used or how it was applied, but something to look out for.
