i wash/starch a lot of fabric . . . and it gets all wrinkly and misshaped . . . and imo you really need the hard surface of the iron & heat to bring it back/realign the fabric. i think it's probably due to so much water in starch.

have you ever tried spray sizing on the fabric (before you cut/manipulate it) instead of spray starch? it gives the fabric more body and doesn't create as much stiffness.

edit . . . the above is in reference to 100% cotton fabric . . . it may work differently on other fabrics.
