since you have a new cricut you dont have to but once you start using it it is best to have the deep cut blade and you also want to add fusible webbing to the back of the material, its easier for the machine to cut, you are going to place the fabric side down and the paper backing of the fusible webbing also want to get some painters tape to tape the edges so the fabric doesnt move especially once your mat isnt as sticky as when it is new...HTH
