I do alot of applique and I think it is very important to use something like Heat and Bond to adhere the applique piece.
If it is not 'stuck down', after a couple of washings it looks really bad and it gets all wrinkled and does not lay nice and flat.
I would not do any applique without using the Heat and Bond.
A stablizer of some sort makes it easier to do the edge stitching.
