Default Sewing Firecracker Bows

Okay, so I used the free tut that was posted the other day to try the firecracker bows.

The first one turned out great! Minus the fact that it was a little flatter on one side because I sewed a little too far away from the middle and it made it a little flat. But other than that it was awesome.

The next one that I tried I couldn't sew back through the middle. Its so thick! Any ideas on a way to sew through that won't break my needle but not make it flat? Tips or tricks anyone? THANKS!!!
