I use both. If I'm cutting ribbon I use the slanted tip, if I'm just heat sealing normally I use a lighter but if the woodburner is on, I'll touch it to the barrel.

Get yourself a glass cutting board to cut your ribbon. I bought one at Walmart, pretty big and I use it to cut my ribbon plus I also taped a paper ruler to the bottom of it so I never have to measure prior to cutting, it's on the board. HTH!
