You really just need thinner ribbon. When I bake my ribbon for korkers, I generally use 3/8 inch ribbon. Some girls on here also use 1/8 and 1/4 inch ribbon.
Even if you took a lighter to the entire length, it will pucker up and could easily come apart and fray.
