Default how to stop fraying when cutting lengthwise.

I am really quite new to bow making and when the ribbon is too thick for what i need i cut it lengthwise in half, but it always frays. I wrap it around dowel rods and bake it to make it curly, but it needs to be thin for the type of bow i am making. would heat sealing the whole length of it work? I tried the glue stuff, but it doesn't work very well and it makes a huge mess. I have my first craft sale for this in October, and I want them to look good! Any suggestions would be so welcome! thank you!
