I use the metal nail file on the tip of the wood burning tool. If you look at it, you will notice that it starts to turn black, just file the ends/sides of the tip. If I notice that it is starting to turn my ribbon brown, I stop and file the tip. Then I just recut the end of the piece that just turned brown, just trim real close to my original cut.
