I use crochet cotton. I use white. I get it at Michaels, but here is a link from Joann.com. It lasts a long time. I just precut a ton of pieces so I don't have to deal with it every time I need some. It is strong, but I have had it to break once or twice on me when I was pulling it super, super tight. I use the salon clips with the hair-hardware figure 8. I tie it around twice through the clip, pull it tight, and knot it several times. Then, after it is off the clip, I wrap it around several times and tie more knots. I even stack the bows on top of each other and use the string to tie them together. I ALWAYS sew all the bows though - through the middle and through the stack.
