I think you could use more pieces but I think if the pieces had a tighter "kork" they'd stand up better. Are you using a 1/4 inch dowel? You have to firmly wrap the ribbon on the dowel too - and getting that *just* right tension is a trial & error thing (at least it was for me!)

These are about 2.5 inch - 3 inch korkers with about 30-35 pieces.

See how tight these korker pieces are? I'm not trying to say I make the best korkers or anything but I think the tighter "curls" make the korker into that elusive "puff ball" shape we're all striving for.
