Default quick korker question

I HATE making korkers. I love the way they look and customers love them too so sometimes I just have to make them. Here's my issue:
When I take the ribbon off the dowel before I cut it, the heat from the wood burner causes the ribbon to get less curly at the ends. When I cut the ribbon ON the dowel, I have to go slowly to keep from cutting the wrong spot since it is wrapped so tightly............then I end up with burned spots at the end of the ribbon. What am I doing wrong?
