For the build up...I keep a wet washcloth next to my work station and wipe the tip of the wood burner frequently. When it gets really mungy I use an emery board to clean it really well.
The cutting thing....I always get that frayed, stringy thing as well. I just cut everything with scissors and then touch the cut end briefly to the wood burner tip to seal it. Not as efficient as one step but it works and seals better than fraycheck did.
