I am no expert, but I make mine using the butterfly method and actually measure and mark my ribbon to make sure that it is the same all the way around.
I am hoping to get the new twisted template soon, just waiting on feedback from others.
As for the stiffness, I actually use spray starch and then bake then for about 20 minutes at 200 degrees. So far, none have lost their shapes.
