One suggestion I have with the woodburner is to keep a wet washcloth in a bowl next to where you are working. I've heard it helps cool down the woodburner tip so it doesn't melt the ribbon so much.

There used to be instructions for a woodburning mat on this site. If I remember right, it was a cutting mat topped with glass. I just tried the link I found before, but the thread must have been moved.
