Yes it is a lot of money, but worth it. Like i said, it has more than paid for itself. Some of my sites for free designs are:
http://www.annthegran.com - she has thousands in all different catagories
http://www.free embroiderystuff.com
http://www.search4designs.com - you can put in what your looking for and a list comes up with all the free designs
http://www.bunnycup.com She has some really cute stuff, has a good sale selection, and has great monthly sales.
Most other sites will have a free design at the bottom of their design packs. Ebay is a good place to get single designs.

http://www.melcomart.com is where i ordered my thread. the brand is arc and i have never had any problems with it. i think it was around $1.25 for an 1,100 yard spool. this was 7 years ago, and i ordered around 100 spools, so i don't know if there was some kind of discount or not. I still have at least 95% of 99% of the thread left, i have only had to replace the basic colors.
