I also struggled with the glue gun,,strings everywhere! I started using E-6000 to do flipflops and have not gotten the glue gun out since. I love the stuff. I screw off the cap, then use a toothpick or popsicle stick to apply it with. I haven't gotten "stoned" on the stuff yet, but I would be cautious if your child(ren) are in the same room where you are working. I actually have my sewing/craft area in a vented laundry room,,,maybe you can find a vented area
