When I started, like when I first, first started - I would buy random ribbons in all sizes to try different bow making techniques. Later, I realized that working with the 1.5" grosgrain was where it's at, and went from there. A good way to get started with different colors, is to go to the and buy a convenience pack which has all different colors for you to work with. Make sure you buy the 3/8" as well as the 1 1/2" so you can make the bows (using the 1 1/2") and bow centers (using 3/8"), and line the clips. Just my humble opinion :-)
