I've heard of people using their wood burner on cookie sheets, but I think glass is the way to go. I have a really nice thick piece of tempered glass that I use. I place it over a rotary cutting mat so I can measure and cut at the same time.
My other recommendation is to use the fine point tip, not the chisel. If you want to cut straight lines the chisel is okay, but I use metal stencils for small things and I freehand a lot when I make ribbon sculptures. I like having the control that the fine point allows.
