Wow... great ideas! Snaps are supposed to be self-setting (no hole required), but grograin seems to be a problem. Did some experimenting and here are the results:
1. #00 grommet hole cutter (smallest available; meant for fabric) - too big (4.5mm).

2. Crop-A-Dile 1/8" punch - bad cut (although I have abused it and it's probably dull).

3. Woodburner - SUCCESS! THANKS, arcmis!
This is the style snap I'm using...

It doesn't play well with grograin, apparently.
