I have tried many different ways, but for the best hold I have found cutting down the stem as far as possible works the best. I take all of the layers off to the rhinestone and trim the stem as close to that first layer as possibly. Then I re-assemble all layers and hot glue in between each of them. I attach alligator clips to these and this method IMO provides the smoothest way to attach.
I use pretty much the same method as well. I also like to use jeweled brads to hold all the layers together and attach my clips to the bottom covering the brad tabs.
