I did this in photoshop by using the polygonal lasso tool to cut out the elephant (copy and paste cut out to new layer) and then adjusting the brightness on the bottom layer to make background white and then slightly adjusting the brightness of the 'cut out' layer.

Thanks so much! That's VERY helpful! I'll have to try using those features on my next photos. My husband is extremely skilled at PhotoShop, but wants me to play around and learn everything myself instead of helping... He's great, but doesn't have patience with my bow stuff!
